Bilwadi Churna is an ayurvedic medicine that is used for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), colitis, diarrhea, and dysentery. It has digestive stimulant and astringent actions. So, it helps to improve digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes. Its ingredients including Saunf, Hingu, Dhania, and Sonth improve metabolism and increase the bioavailability of nutrients from the food.
Bilwadi Churna reduces abdominal discomfort in IBS. In IBS, it reduces loose stools. It is the best medicine for IBS if the patient has more tendency toward loose stools than constipation. Generally, it is prescribed along with Panchamrit Parpati.

Bilwadi Churna acts as GRAHI (astringent). So, it absorbs the excess liquid content from the intestines. Thus, it reduces the frequency of loose stools. Ingredients in Bilwadi Churna also improves digestion and metabolism. Therefore, it prevents elimination of undigested foods too.

Diarrhea
Bilwadi Churna benefits in both acute and chronic cases of diarrhea. Especially, it is an effective remedy for chronic diarrhea. It has astringent actions and absorbs the liquid from the intestine. As a result, it reduces the frequency of diarrhea.
In diarrhea, it can be used alone or in a combination with Kutajghan Vati or Kutajadi Vati and Ras Parpati. In the chronic cases of diarrhea, it provides superior results when used in combination with Panchamrit Parpati.
Dysentery
Bilwadi Churna contains Aegle Marmelos seed. Aegle Marmelos fruit pulp and seeds contain a bioactive substance known as a lectin. Lectin is effective against shigella bacteria. As a result, it helps to treat Shigella Dysenteriae Infection (Bacillary Dysentery). (1, 2)
Other ingredients also have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent action, which also help to reduce the intensity of symptoms. These ingredients also have antispasmodic action, which helps to alleviate abdominal pain and cramps.

- Soft and liquid stool
- Poor digestion
- Sticky and hard to flush stool or mucus in the stool
However, Bilwadi Churna alone may not be probably work in all cases of IBS. Therefore, it is used in combination with the following medicines:
- Panchamrit Parpati, Dashmoolarishta, or Hingvastak Churna if Vata Dosha dominates
- Panchamrit Parpati if the patient also has hyperacidity or heartburn
- Sutshekhar Ras or Praval Panchamrit and Lodhrasava if Pitta Dosha dominates
- Swarna Parpati if mind involves or if the patient has inflammatory bowel disease
- Dugdha Vati and Kutajarishta if the patient has edema
Colitis
There are several causes of colitis (inflammation of the colon). Bilwadi Churna is effective in all cases. However, it is used along with Vanshlochan, Praval Pishti, Mukta Pishti, and Swarna Parpati or Swarna Bhupathi Ras or Hemagarbha Pottali Ras for getting the best results in colitis.
