Roghan Badam Shirin (Badam Rogan & Badam Oil) – Sweet Almond Oil

Roghan Badam Shirin is commonly known as Badam Rogan, Badam Oil and sweet almond oil. The sweet almond kernels (especially BADAM MALAI GIRI imported from Afghanistan) are used for extracting Rogan Badam Shirin. Badam oil is the widely used for its health benefits internally as well as externally. Generally, Roghan Badam Shirin is popular for its beneficial effects on skin and hair. Badam oil is a rich moisturiser that works against dry skin and chapped lips on regular application. It also provides cardiovascular and neurological benefits. Badam Rogan is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, essential omega-6 acid. It also contains oleic and linoleic acid. The zero cholesterol in Badam Rogan makes it desirable for regular consumption.

Roghan Badam Shirin is light and mostly colourless. It can have a sweet odour or be odourless. In Ayurveda and Unani medicine, Badam Rogan is commonly used as external application for treating black spots, marks, blemishes, dark circles, hair fall, premature whitening of hair, dry skin and chapped lips etc. Oral intake of Roghan Badam Shirin is helpful in constipation, insomnia, memory loss, headache etc.

Benefits of Badam Rogan

Roghan Badam Shirin or Badam Rogan has many health benefits and it is used to treat several diseases due to its potent therapeutic effects.

Dry Skin & Chapped Lips

Roghan Badam Shirin is light and non-greasy. It moisturizes for the skin due to its emollient effects. It can effectively lubricate extreme dry skin and chapped lips. It can also work wonders on skin rashes and stretch marks.  From ancient times, Badam oil is used for regular and therapeutic massages.

Inflammatory Skin Diseases

Badam oil has anti-inflammatory properties. It can bring down inflammation and soothe skin inflammation, when used topically. Badam Rogan mixed can relieve itching and redness that appears with dermal conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Mixing one ml Neem Oil in 10 ml Badam Oil can increase the antipruritic effects in eczema and other skin diseases.

Roghan Badam Shirin is also effective to reducing inflammation when taken internally.

Dark Circles

Dark circles can have many underlying causes. Roghan Badam Shirin works for dark circles when there is any of following causes.

  1. Excessive sun exposure
  2. Fatigue (Internal intake of Badam Rogan)
  3. Loss of fat and collagen
  4. Pigmentation irregularities and hyperpigmentation
  5. Rubbing or scratching eyes

Hyperpigmentation also occurs due to increased PITTA in the body according to ayurveda. Therefore, in some cases, Roghan Badam Shirin may not work alone. In such cases, the mixture of Liquorice (Mulethi), Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and Dried Coriander Leaves should be used internally in dosage of 3 grams for reducing hyperpigmentation.

Blemishes

The clogged pores with sebum or dead skin cells are the main cause of blemishes. In blemishes, the clogs are on the top layers of the skin as compared to acne or pimples in which clogs are deeper. Acne may appear red because of present of bacteria.

Roghan Badam Shirin is non-greasy. The high amount of fatty acids in Badam Oil dissolves the sebum and a gentle massage with Badam oil removes the dead skin cells from the clogged pores. It also heals the damage skin and reduces blemishes.

Wrinkles

Badam Rogan is credited with antioxidant properties. It also contains large amounts of Vitamin E. As an antioxidant, it helps in reducing and prevention of wrinkles and fine lines. Badam oil can also reverse the damage caused by the ultraviolet rays from the sun exposure. Regular application of Badam Rogan will replenish the skin and keeps it glowing, smooth and young.

Constipation

Roghan Badam Shirin has mild laxative effects. It can work on smooth bowel movement and intestine function. It is credited with natural laxative benefits and is milder in comparison with castor oil. Badam Rogan should be used when a patient has following symptoms:

  1. Dry Stools
  2. Hard Stools or hard lumps
  3. Difficult defecation
  4. Pain during bowel movement
  5. Anal cuts

How to Use

If any of above symptoms is present, then initially 5 ml Badam Rogan should be taken thrice daily in 200 ml milk for a week. The dosage can also be increased according to the severity of the constipation. After a week, it should be taken once at night in dosage of 10 ml. After 15 days, the dosage should be decreased to 5 ml per day and should be consumed for 3 months regularly to avoid recurrence.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Roghan Badam Shirin improves bowel transit and intestinal functions. It helps restoring natural peristaltic movement and eases in passing stools. The anti-inflammatory effect reduces the intestinal inflammation and colonic irritation. It consequently reduces the symptoms, particular constipation.

Caution: Roghan Badam Shirin should be used in less dosage i.e. 5 ml per day in Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Secondly, it is not effective during the phase when patient has loose stools. It is effective in the phase when patient has constipation. In some cases, when used in phase of loose stools, it may aggravate the condition due to its mild laxative effects. Therefore, the careful use of Badam Rogan can help in irritable bowel syndrome and unwise use can aggravate the condition.

Headache & Migraine

However, Roghan Badam Shirin is not effective in all cause of headache and migraine. The results of Badam Rogan can vary person to person. As per our clinical experience, Roghan Badam Shirin is useful when patient has severe headache, pulsating or throbbing pain, stress, constipation and neck stiffness. If anyone has one or more of these prominent symptoms, Badam Rogan can help alleviate pain in headaches and migraines.

Nasal Administration

Its nasal administration is headache and migraines. Ghee (clarified butter) is used for same purpose. Badam oil and Ghee both works on throbbing or pulsating pain, but here are the major differences for selecting most suitable remedy for patients.

How to Use: 2 Drops of Badam Rogan should be instilled in both nostrils especially before sleep at night. Badam Rogan should also be taken orally in dosage of 5 ml once a day with milk.

Badam Rogan or Roghan Badam Shirin can also be taken orally by consuming 1 to 2 teaspoons. If consuming the oil directly is least appetising, you can try it as a salad dressing or on cooked vegetables. It can also be used in general cooking. Badam Rogan can also be taken with milk, protein drink or plain honey. Mix 2 teaspoon of Badam Rogan with any of these food items for consumption.

In constipation, Roghan Badam Shirin should be taken with milk for easy bowel movements. Mix 2-4 teaspoons of the oil with milk and have it in the night.

Skin Application: Badam Rogan can be generously applied over the skin, lips and hair. Regular external application of the oil rejuvenates skin and hair.

Nasal Application: Badam Rogan can relieve dryness and block in the nostril. Apply a few drops in each nostril for dryness. Massage the oil inside the nose, followed by external nose.  It moisturises the nose, ear and throat.

Ear Application: Traditional ayurveda medicine talks of cleaning earwax with Badam Rogan. Apply 2-3 drops of almond oil kept at room temperature in each ear. Lie with head and treated side held high for 2-3 minutes for even distribution. Cleaning your ears relieves insomnia with better sleep.

FAQs about Badam Oil

Can we give Badam Oil to infants aged less than 12 months?

Yes, Badam oil can be given for infants if they have constipation with hard stools or any problem in which it is indicated.

Can I take Badam oil with Honey?

Yes, Badam oil can be mixed in honey and taken with warm water. Badam oil (almond oil) with honey helps in the management of lungs diseases.

Almond (Badam) oil is recommended in winters, but I also want to use it in summers. Can we take almond oil in summers?

Yes, there should be no problem taking almond (Badam oil) in summers. However, it has hot potency, which means it produces warmness in the body, so the best adjuvant taking almond oil in summers is lukewarm milk.

Is it advisable to apply rogan badam shirin after taking bath in the morning and go out in the sun?

Roghan Badam Shirin can be applied after taking bath in the morning. It is also the best natural sunscreen because it acts as blocking harmful UV rays and prevents skin from the damage. In addition, it is also helpful for the reversing skin damage that already occurred.

Is badam rogan helpful for reducing hyper-pigmentation and dark spots on the face?

Yes, Badam Rogan is beneficial for reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation. However, internal supplements like Mulethi (Yashtimadhu) Churna, Amalaki Rasayana, Parwal Pishti, Mukta Pishti and other remedies may also required according to underlying cause and dosha analysis as per ayurveda.
