Kumkumadi Lepam (Lepana)

Kumkumadi Lepam is an ayurvedic formulation used for improving the skin complexion and glow on the face. It is beneficial for the treatment of blemishes, dark spots, wrinkles, dark circles and hyperpigmentation. It is formulated based on the ingredients of Kumkumadi Oil as given in Ashtanga Hridayam and Bhaishajya Ratnavali. However, the actual preparation of the Ashtanga Hridayam is a type of oil as discussed in the article on Kumkumadi Oil and recommended for the nasal instillation and facial massage for the same indications in which Kumkumadi Lepam is indicated. Kumkumadi cream is also available in the market and also prepared on the base of Kumkumadi Oil.

Main Ingredients

  1. Kesar (Saffron) – Crocus Sativus
  2. Ushira – Vetiveria Zizanioides
  3. Lal Chandan (Red Sandalwood) – Pterocarpus Santalinus
  4. Manjistha – Rubia Cordifolia
  5. Mulethi (Yashtimadhu) – Licorice – Glycyrrhiza Glabra
  6. Padmaka – Prunus Cerasoides
  7. Haldi (Turmeric) – Curcuma Longa
  8. Daruhaldi – Berberis Aristata
  9. Lac – Laccifer Lacca
  10. Neel Kamal (Blue Lotus) Nymphaea Stellata
  11. Sesame oil or coconut oil

Note: Ingredients may vary according to different manufacturing companies or brands. The most of these ingredients are present in almost all brands. Some companies prepare using sesame oil and some use coconut oil as a base. Some manufacturers also add white soft paraffin or cream base to make Kumkumadi cream. Additional ingredients may also be present as per different brands. Please check your product’s ingredient list for more details.

Efficacy

Kumkumadi Lepam is less effective for many people and alone may not provide good results. The simple massage with Kumkumadi Oil and its nasal instillation along with internal medicines like Amla, Yashtimadhu, Praval Pishti, and Mukta Pishti etc. are more effective for blemishes and hyperpigmentation and other beauty problems.

Direction for Use

Kumkumadi Lepam should be applied on the face and kept for 60 minutes and then wash the face with warm water. If you are using a cream base, then it should be left for overnight or for at least 3 to 6 hours.

Kumkumadi Lepam is an external application and considered most safe preparation for the skin.
